The Band

The band is a four piece with a combined total gig experience of over 70 years. We are in essence a rock band. That is not to say we are "heavy" because we are not - it simply means that when we play, everyone gets carried along with the music and the whole place rocks. To avoid disappointment please do not book us if your requirement is for background music.

The line up comprises:

Simon Hodson
Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar
Simon Hassell
Drums
Tony Fox
Bass Guitar & Backing Vocals

Paul Smith
Lead / Rhythm Guitar & Backing Vocals

Simon has previously been front man for a number of well known regional bands but he is now showing is true vocal talent as the lead singer with Retro.
His previous bands gave him lots of live gigging experience. His musical influences include Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Jeff Buckley and more recently Paul Weller. Simon also plays rhythm guitar. He is also a Graphic Designer

Simon plays drums & percussion. He has played the drums since the age of 12 and was once a member of 'Band in Yellow' and 'Grifter'.
Simon has supported major acts namely, 'The Cranberries' 'EMF' and the 'New Fast Automatic Daffodils'. Simon's enthusiasm is contagious you will see this in any of his performances, his not stop energy lifts the crowd. Simon used a Pearl Export kit with Sabian cymbals and Japanese Oak sticks...cause it matters what you hit the drums with!!

Tony is the newest member of the band but has brought with him considerable bass-wielding experience and enthusiasm!
He has played in many original, function and covers bands over the years and his outgoing stage presence helps generate a sense of fun at The Retro Band gigs. A word of warning though, please don't ask him to demonstrate his speciality act of "Naked Ferret Juggling".

Paul plays lead and rhythm guitars and sings backing vocals. He has played in gigging bands since the age of 14 and has provided support at Amnesty International gigs and for those one hit wonders, Doctor and the Medics.
Paul also auditioned (and sadly failed) for the famous 1980's Channel 4  music show "The Tube". When you see us live you will know what we mean when we say that Paul is a keen collector of nice guitars.
